Manny Staying with Dodgers

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

“LOS ANGELES — Manny Ramirez is coming back to the Dodgers next season.

The team said Friday that the slugger exercised his $20 million contract option for 2010. His agent Scott Boras informed general manager Ned Colletti of the decision, which Ramirez had until this month to make.

He could have exercised an out clause in the two-year, $45 million deal he signed in March.

Ramirez hit .290 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs in 104 regular season games. He missed 50 games while suspended for violating baseball’s drug policy.

In the NL division series against St. Louis, Ramirez batted .308 with no homers and two RBI. Against Philadelphia in the NL championship series, he hit .263 with one homer and two RBI.”

The Dodgers must be ecstatic that they were able to solidify that Manny will be back next year the first day in the off-season. This is slightly different then last year, when the signing of Manny went all the way into spring training.

Dodgers’ Padilla in Hunting Accident

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

“Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Vicente Padilla was treated for a minor gunshot wound after a hunting accident in Nicaragua on Tuesday, his agent said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Padilla’s agent, Adam Katz, said the pitcher was grazed in his right thigh by a bullet, sought treatment at a local hospital and was discharged after 30 to 40 minutes, the newspaper reported.

The Times said, according to media reports in Nicaragua, that Padilla was injured at a shooting range. At least two reports stated that Padilla, 32, was accidentally shot by a bodyguard who was attempting to fix Padilla’s gun.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said he has told Katz the team is interested in re-signing Padilla, who is expected to file for free agency. He said he did not know enough about the incident to say whether it would impact the Dodgers’ decision, according to the report.”

This is a frightening story coming from Padilla’s agent. If I were Ned Colletti, I would certainly try to find out more information about what happened with this accident. This could very-well impact the Dodgers decision on re-signing the pitcher.

Phillies Advance to World Series

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

“PHILADELPHIA — Ryan Howard and the defending champs are back in the World Series — proving last year was no fluke and looking even more dangerous this time around.

Jayson Werth homered twice, Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz also connected and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win their second straight NL pennant.”

The Phillies totally dominated the Dodgers in this series and now for the 2nd straight year, they will be representing the National League in the World Series. However, I feel that this year the Phillies are not as strong and will lose the World Series if they are to play the Yankees.

Manny Listed as Day to Day

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

“LOS ANGELES — Manny Ramirez is day to day after being hit by a pitch in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the Cincinnati Reds.

A team spokesman said Ramirez was hit on the side of his left hand by a pitch from Homer Bailey leading off the third inning Tuesday night. He was replaced by pinch runner Juan Pierre.

Ramirez went to a hospital for precautionary X-rays, which were negative.

“It’s scary, it’s so easy to break a bone,” Dodgers manager Joe Torre said after the Dodgers’ 12-3 win. “We’re very fortunate it was only a bruise. You don’t even want to think about doing without him again.”

The Dodgers and Ramirez are lucky that he will not see any time on the DL. Manny was hit very hard on the left hand by Bailey, but since the X-rays are negative there is not much to worry about. It just goes to show you how easily players can get hurt sometimes. He may receive the day off for tomorrow’s game against the Reds but not too much other than that.
