Manny Staying with Dodgers

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

“LOS ANGELES — Manny Ramirez is coming back to the Dodgers next season.

The team said Friday that the slugger exercised his $20 million contract option for 2010. His agent Scott Boras informed general manager Ned Colletti of the decision, which Ramirez had until this month to make.

He could have exercised an out clause in the two-year, $45 million deal he signed in March.

Ramirez hit .290 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs in 104 regular season games. He missed 50 games while suspended for violating baseball’s drug policy.

In the NL division series against St. Louis, Ramirez batted .308 with no homers and two RBI. Against Philadelphia in the NL championship series, he hit .263 with one homer and two RBI.”

The Dodgers must be ecstatic that they were able to solidify that Manny will be back next year the first day in the off-season. This is slightly different then last year, when the signing of Manny went all the way into spring training.

Dodgers’ Padilla in Hunting Accident

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

“Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Vicente Padilla was treated for a minor gunshot wound after a hunting accident in Nicaragua on Tuesday, his agent said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Padilla’s agent, Adam Katz, said the pitcher was grazed in his right thigh by a bullet, sought treatment at a local hospital and was discharged after 30 to 40 minutes, the newspaper reported.

The Times said, according to media reports in Nicaragua, that Padilla was injured at a shooting range. At least two reports stated that Padilla, 32, was accidentally shot by a bodyguard who was attempting to fix Padilla’s gun.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said he has told Katz the team is interested in re-signing Padilla, who is expected to file for free agency. He said he did not know enough about the incident to say whether it would impact the Dodgers’ decision, according to the report.”

This is a frightening story coming from Padilla’s agent. If I were Ned Colletti, I would certainly try to find out more information about what happened with this accident. This could very-well impact the Dodgers decision on re-signing the pitcher.

Phillies Advance to World Series

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

“PHILADELPHIA — Ryan Howard and the defending champs are back in the World Series — proving last year was no fluke and looking even more dangerous this time around.

Jayson Werth homered twice, Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz also connected and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win their second straight NL pennant.”

The Phillies totally dominated the Dodgers in this series and now for the 2nd straight year, they will be representing the National League in the World Series. However, I feel that this year the Phillies are not as strong and will lose the World Series if they are to play the Yankees.

Yankees Take 1-0 Lead

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

“NEW YORK — CC Sabathia heated up as the night went on, throwing fastballs past the Los Angeles Angels and pumping his fist for emphasis.

On a blustery night more suited to bobsleds than baseballs, Sabathia pitched eight superb innings of four-hit ball to win his second straight postseason start, and the New York Yankees took advantage of a rare sloppy game by the Angels to win the AL championship series opener 4-1 Friday.

“That’s why we got CC,” Johnny Damon said. “To be a workhorse during the season, of course, but to shut down teams in the postseason.”

This was a tremendous game from C.C. Sabathia and the Yankees to strike first in this series. The Yankees are the hottest team in the playoffs, starting 4-0 in their current playoff run. Tonight, the Yankees hope to continue this trend with A.J. Burnett on the hill.

Hornets trade Butler

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

“The New Orleans Hornets, in a move to shed some payroll after the recent acquisition of Emeka Okafor, have agreed to trade swingman Rasual Butler to the Los Angeles Clippers for a future second-round pick, according to NBA front-office sources.

Butler is scheduled to earn $3.9 million next season. With the Clippers looking for an extra shooter and depth at both shooting guard and small forward, sources said the team was amenable to absorbing the final year of Butler’s contract, which will save New Orleans nearly $8 million when factoring in the luxury-tax implications.”

I like this trade for both parties. With the move, the Hornets are able to free up the money held by Butler to appease for new comer Okafor, and the Clippers can add a good back court player. Butler is a solid guard and since the Clippers need all the help they can get, Butler will do just fine.

Gasol Injures Finger

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

“MADRID — Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol had surgery on his left index finger after an injury during practice with Spain’s national team. He will be sidelined at least three weeks.

The Spanish basketball federation said Tuesday that Gasol damaged a ligament Monday while blocking a shot. He will wear a splint for 20 days, but the federation did not say if he will play in the European Championship in Poland, which starts Sept. 7.”

Gasol is a great player and contributed big time to the Lakers championship this year, so I am sure they were worried once they heard the news of him injuring his finger with Spain. However, with the recent news of the surgery going very well there should be no problems with Gasol next year for the NBA season.
