After speaking at a news conference regarding the first bowl game at new Yankee Stadium, Hal Steinbrenner answered questions about contract extensions. The Yankees policy on contract extensions will not be changed for Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Joe Girardi, all of whom will have their contracts expire at the end of the 2010 season. All negotiations for their contracts will take place after the season is over, but according to Hal, it’s nothing personal. Jeter and Rivera can become free agents after the World Series and Girardi’s contract is up at the conclusion of the regular season.

The 2010 New York Yankees are fresh off a World Series championship and are feeling better than ever. The Yankees pitching ace C.C. Sabathia had this to say about the Yankees upcoming season:

“I go back to those core four, those guys can stay hungry after five rings. They come in and they’re excited to get to the ballpark every day. It rubs off on the whole team. We definitely look to those guys for leadership and we look for them this year, again, to lead us.”

With an attitude like this, look for the Yankees to be at the top again.

When Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th career homerun on August 4th, 2007 at the old Yankee Stadium, a college student caught the ball. Now over two years later, that ball was finally sold. SCP auctions sold the ball on Thursday for a sum of $103,579. The buyer wanted to remain anonymous. Imagine paying that type of money?

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman began his offseason planning the morning after the Yankees won the 2009 World Series. On Friday, the Yankees set their budget parameters for the 2011 season.

Last year, the payroll of the team was at $208 million dollars, where as this year the goal is to have a payroll of about $185 million dollars.

Cashman had this to say about the Yankees current standing this offseason:

“Thankfully we have a lot of answers already on our roster, but there’s still areas of need that we need to address.”

With that, keep in mind that both Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon are now officially free agents. I would look for the Yankees to make a serious bid towards at least one of these players, as well as John Lackey.
