Mets sign Jason Bay – What Next?

Pending a physical, the New York Mets have signed Jason Bay to a four year, $66 million contract with a vesting option for a fifth year which could make it $80 million.

What’s next you may ask for the Amazin’s? The Mets will now be looking to secure themselves a reliable number 2 starting pitcher to go alongside Johan Santana.  For that to happen, now that John Lackey went to the Boston Red Sox, it looks like the best possible way of finding another gun would be through trade. However, here are my top 5 remaining pitchers, signed either through free-agency or trade options available for the Mets.

1. Carlos Zambrano- There are rumors out there that the Chicago Cubs are willing to part ways with their ace for the right price.  What better way for the Mets to package a trade with the Cubbies involving Luis Castillo, John Maine, Jonathan Neise and Fernando Martinez for Carlos Zambrano and one or two low level prospects and then go sign Orlando Hudson at second base. Lets face it, F-Mart is solid, but he’s not going to make an impact on this team especially since there’s Kirk Nieuwenhius who looks to have a much brighter future.  Jonathan Neise is an average player with an above average curveball, but that’s all he has.  The Mets have a kid named Brad Holt in their farm system that projects to be a future number 2 starter with a mid-high 90’s fastball and excellent breaking pitches, which would make Neise expendable.

2. Ben Sheets – He may be coming off of surgery, but the Mets need to take a look at him because when he was good, he had electric stuff.  He has a career ERA of 3.72 and a record of 86-83.  You have to realize that is very impressive considering he’s been on some bad teams in the past. Maybe offering a two year, $16 million contract with an option for a third year could get the job done.

3. Erik Bedard- Very intriguing player, he has a career ERA of 3.71 with a 51-41 record on very bad Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners teams. Try signing him for a two year, $20 million contract Omar.

4. Josh Johnson- Maybe the Mets could make another trade with the Marlins for their young stud. This scenario is highly unlikely but its worth taking a look at. He has a career record of 34-16 and an ERA of 3.40 with the Florida Marlins.

5. Chien-Ming Wang- Also coming off of surgery, this is an excellent option.  The Mets could look to get him cheap also because he’s coming off surgery and had a 9.46 ERA last season when he did play.  He played hurt, but when he’s healthy he’s a proven winner.

Mets Make Offers to Major Free Agent

As the Winter Meetings have concluded in Indianapolis, the New York Mets have made their offers. They offered left fielder Jason Bay a four year $65 million offer and a two year offer for catcher Bengie Molina. The Mets feel Jason Bay is a pull hitter suited for the Citifield deep left field dimensions and a cheaper alternative to Matt Holliday. He’s still favored to return to the Boston Red Sox, but at least the Mets made him an offer and didn’t just sit back doing nothing at these winter meetings. Bengie Molina is supposedly good with a pitching staff and an upgrade behind the plate from 2009. Bengie Molina will be the third cathcer the Mets have signed during these meetings (Chris Coste, Henry Blanco). Lets just see if Omar Minaya is willing to dish out the money to sign some of the big names in the market such as left fielder Matt Holliday or ace pitcher John Lackey.

Winter Meetings Day 3

As the winter meetings progress in Indianapolis, the price among free agent pitchers seems to be increasing. You would think that the price demands would decrease due to the economy, but it is quite the opposite. Brad Penny, who was released by the Boston Red Sox last year received a one year $7.5 million contract from the St. Louis Cardinals. Randy Wolf was offered a three year $30 million contract by the Milwaukee Brewers.

With rising demands one would think the market for a top tier pitcher such as John Lackey would have to be comparable to the AJ Burnett contract (5 year $82.5 million) in order to obtain his services. John Lackey is the only pitcher on the free agent market where the New York Mets seem willing to go past three years. In an ideal world the Mets will make a quick impact in signing John Lackey to appease the fans, but Omar Minaya will remain patient and not just make a deal for the sake of making one.

Mets trying to shop Luis Castillo

According to Metsblog.com, the New York Mets are looking to trade Luis Castillo.  This could possibly be the most important move this offseason Omar Minaya could make.  Trading Castillo would enable the Mets to sign Gold Glove second baseman Orlando Hudson. A few teams have contacted Omar Minaya regarding Luis Castillo including the Dodgers and Cubs. If Omar has an offer for Luis Castillo, he should take it. Orlando Hudson WANTS to be a Met.

After trading Luis Castillo, the Mets are looking for power from First Base or Left Field. When talking about First Base, the Mets most viable options are either to resign Carlos Delgado for a 1 year deal or continue to allow Daniel Murphy to play at first until Ike Davis is promoted to the Majors. In Left Field, like many other teams the Mets are looking to sign Matt Holliday. Matt Holliday would be a great fit in Flushing, it just all comes down to the dollar figures. With the additions of Matt Holliday, Orlando Hudson, and a solid pitcher that could throw 200+ innings (Cough Cough John Lackey), this would definetly make the Mets the favorite to win the National League.

I just got one message for Omar: “DONT SIGN BENGIE MOLINA!!!”  Omar apparently has a man crush on Molina and he would be a terrible fit in a Mets uniform, not to mention he probably wouldn’t even fit into the largest Met uniform.  He’s slow, he’s fat, he’s 36 years old and he’s a free swinger.  We already have one of those in Jeff Franceour but at least he’s young and has plays hard at all times.  Molina is a terrible option Omar.  Don’t do it Omar!!!
